 Celluloid Advertising Mirror
Horlick's Malted Milk c. 1890's

This is a celluloid mirror advertising for Horlick's Malted Milk.  This most sought after mirror features incredibly beautiful artwork with a lovely young milk maid holding a container of Horlick's, while standing next to a cow.  On the side of the cow is printed "Ask For Horlick's At All Fountains and Hotels."  Around the top edge of the front is printed "The Maiden Fair, Was Dressed In Silk, She Drinks The Horlick's Malted Milk." Around the lower front of the butotn is printed, "Tea Or Coffee It Does Replace, In Health Or Sickness, Wins the Race."   The text is in a royal blue color on a gold backgrounds. 
The mirror measures approx. 2 1/8 inches in diameter.  The print is in very good condition, and the celluloid covering is intact with no visible cracks.  There is some minor foxing of the mirror.   On the rim is the manufacturer's name, "Parisian Novelty Co. Chicago."  
This piece is from the collection of Doug Humphrey of Big Bear, CA.  He has been collecting advertising mirrors for nearly half a century. Please check out our ebay store for more mirrors, buttons, and other antique advertising items.

J.W. Horlick's began in 1873 when brothers James and William Horlick started the business in Chicago. They patented their milk drink as an artificial infant formula.   In 1875 the company moved to Racine, Wisconsin.  James returned to his native England, where the company expanded and provided products for soldiers in World War I. After James' death in 1921, the company split with William running the American operation, and James' son handing the foreign business. William died at age 90 in 1936. The company is still in business today, owned by GlaxoSmithKline, and its products are still sold worldwide.
