In this video companion to her book Essential Guide to Carriage Driving Maine clinician Robyn Cuffey offers helpful tips on selecting affordable and safe combinations of beginner's cart and lightweight breast-collar pleasure driving harness for a single horse, shows variations in harness styles, explains how to apply and adjust the various harness parts and how to hitch the horse to the cart's shafts, and demonstrates safe driving on the road.

Very Good Video for those wanting to Drive their Horse in harness!
Driving horses for pleasure is a very growing past time, especially for those whom love horses, but for some reason can't ride much. You can take friends with you and have a very enjoyable drive.

This program is informative and well presented. Robyn does an excellent job of stressing safety and informing the viewer of the various types of carts and their intended uses. For example, she explains why the smaller easy entry cart is for smooth terrain and not cross country driving, because of its lightweight construction.

She demonstrates a wooden wheel, much heavier easy entry cart and explains why it would be acceptable for all-terrain driving. She shows how this cart would be more practical for a taller driver, whereas shorter drivers would need a wooden box or something similar on the floor to rest their feet on, as the seat is too high for them to be able to reach the floor, creating a potentially dangerous situation. She gives an excellent explanation of how to size a cart to the size of the horse, and how to adjust the various parts of different kinds of harnesses intended for the single driving horse.

Her explanation and demonstration of a road cart is thorough, including stressing the dangers of using a green horse, because a cart is somewhat difficult to enter and exit quickly in case of an emergency. The showing of various potential road hazards is well presented. The roadway used for this part of the tape includes various features you would typically encounter in driving, allowing her to show how to approach traffic, lawn mowers, trash cans, dogs, a combo cherry picker/wood chipper, and other distractions that might alarm a horse. Robyn is to be commended for her excellent presentations in this program, which is both informative and entertaining.
