From September 6 to October 31 of 1959, eight of the world’s strongest Grandmasters competed in a powerful quadruple Round-Robin Tournament, played in Bled, Zagreb and Belgrade, Yugoslavia, to determine the challenger for the crown of World Chess Champion currently held by Soviet Grandmaster
Mikhail Botvinnik. Amongst those competing
was the young American Robert James "Bobby" Fischer. To commemorate that classic struggle, The House of Staunton,
has recreated the Zagreb '59 Series, Staunton pattern chessmen. These stunning chess pieces are accurate reproductions of one of the most popular chess sets used in the major International tournaments during the 1950s and 1960s.
We have taken the liberty of making some minor modifications, such as replacing
the ball finial atop the King with a more traditional Formeé cross to conform
to modern Western tournament praxis. As illustrated in the image above, the set comes with
both styles of Kings finials. This full-tournament sized Chess set features a
3.875" King height with a 1.75" diameter base and
weighs an impressive 49 ounces (not including additional Queens.) It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!

These Chessmen are crafted from premium Boxwood
and Genuine Ebony. Ebony is a very luxurious and expensive
hardwood that is a very dense, jet black in color and has a natural gloss. It has a very fine grain and can exhibit some blond grain streaking.
Ebony is most famous of the ornamental woods and has been treasured for
literally thousands of years. Archaeologists have found Ebony carvings and
statues in the tombs of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs, including the legendary
King Tutankhamun (Tut) who died more than 3,300 years ago.
