How to Make Your Own Lures and Flies by Mel Marshall
An Outdoor Life Book
Photographs by the Author and Aldine Marshall Here is a book that explains how to make just about every kind of lure and fly for freshwater fishing. It shows you how to get started with a minimum of tools and materials and, in step-by-step photos, leads you through all the phases of a fascinating craft that will provide many hours of off-season enjoyment. Starting with the most basic lure, the author explains how to make a “spoon” from a spoon. Then he shows you how to make dies of hardwood; how to form spoon and spinner blades from scrap metal and assemble the lures with shafts, beads, and clevises. You can finish them by buffing or with special paints. You can work from kits or make your lures from materials found in junkyards or sheet-metal shops. A list of suppliers shows where to write for everything you can’t find locally. Plugs are also easy and fun to make. Using the patterns in this book, you can make templates and carve your plugs from wooden blanks (dowels, for example). You’ll enjoy painting plugs with your own designs, fitting them with eyes and propellers, scoops and rudders. Then there’s the whole world of soft-bodied lures – the plastic imitations of worms, salamanders, minnows, and so forth, that really take fish. These can be cast in liquid plastic from commercial or homemade molds. Also included in this section are instructions for making “surge” lures, the easiest of all, which are composed of surgical tubing, wire, and hooks. The author takes the mystery out of fly tying in the section devoted to his absorbing – and venerable – craft. He tells you what tools (you can get started with four) and materials you need and where to get them, and he teaches you basic tying procedures. After learning the fundamentals, you’ll progress to tying dry and wet flies, streamers, nymphs, bass bugs, poppers, and even saltwater flies. Every step is clearly explained and illustrated. A table of the most popular fly patterns gives dressings for each. If you want to experience the ultimate thrill of taking a fish on a homemade lure or fly, and save money besides, this book will tell you all you need to know about an increasing popular pastime.
