Offered in this eBay auction:
Vintage 70's Ibanez FL-305 Flanger
O.K. Folks, here we go: FULL DISCLOSURE!! Here on eBay there is more unscrupulous item description and lying by omission than any of us are happy about. You read an eBay offering, it sounds like the bee's knees, you bid your hard earned money, and your new item shows up, flawed, working poorly or not at all, and you feel you have no recourse. Your feedback is good & you want to keep it that way. Very frustrating!! It's happened too many times...
I bought this pedal here on eBay as "Flanger Project - Not Working." I remembered this great
sounding flanger from the 70's and as I have a brilliant electronics tech wizard here in New York, I knew it would be worth it to have it restored to it's former glory.
What I didn't know, and wasn't mentioned in the item description is that it's main processing chip had been pilfered . . . . . . . .
So, my Tech called me, saying "This is going to be a pricey repair.." and I gave him the green light. I knew this was worth it. He tracked down the rather expensive Reticon SAD1024A chip and replaced the missing 277ON072P Op Amp with a TL072.
When I went in to play through the repaired unit I heard that familiar and beautiful warm quality that I remembered. The unit sounded fantastic.. but as I turned the knobs to see what else it could do, I thought "This sounds great but it's a little polite." I asked my tech if he could calibrate it differently so that it would keep it's basic quality but also go a little further out.
He tweaked it so it can go to the edge of musical usefulness. I think the pedal is maximized now and it's range is wonderful. It is warm, swirly, swooshy if you want it to be, and it does a great fast Leslie sound.
It now sounds to me to be in the rarified company of the A/D/A Flanger and spare few others.
I'm satisfied that it's doing what it's designed to do. As with many fine guitars and amps of yesteryear I think these beautiful specimens deserve another life.
A description of the controls and their functions:
Speed -
controls the speed/rate of the LFO wave that controls the delay time of the flanger
Width -
controls the depth/amplitude of the LFO wave that controls the delay time of the flanger
Regen -
controls the feedback/resonance of the flanger
Delay Time -
controls the center delay time of the flanger
Delay Level -
controls the mix between the input signal and the flanger signals
About this specific unit:
The pot for "Delay - Time" was bent slightly at some point and the knob feels a little stiff
when you turn it. As it was working perfectly, we decided not to replace it.
The original knob on the far right was missing. In it's place I have put a Boss knob.
If you would prefer a white chicken head pointer knob, let me know.
The circuit board reads "MAXON MP- FL-201" . I have read elsewhere on the internet that
while the board says this, they didn't actually make an FL-201 Flanger.
Two more things!
THIS IS MISSING IT'S BATTERY COVER.
One of the four original rubber feet was replaced with a slightly larger one.

From the internet: The Maxon design studio had advanced (a little) when they put this one together. Recessed panelwork, more restrained colour choices and skirted knobs all went together to make this a less cheap looking stablemate to the Jetlyzer. As is to be expected, an absolutely fabulous soaring flange effect with a couple of interesting extras. Five pots controlling Speed, Width, Regeneration and the rather unusual Delay Time and Volume. These latter two appear to work interactively, with delay time delaying the onset of Flange (good for maintaining control over short, staccato notes), but also seeming to decrease the depth of the flange and adding a comb-filtering effect ..Very Interesting!!! I haven’t seen a Flange as big ,warm and creamy as this since they released "Bodacious Tatas" on video!
