From the publisher's 1928 prospectus:

"Few habitable countries of our world remain so unknown to the people of East and West as Arabia. Even today huge tracts remain white on our maps. The Hedjaz, with Mecca and Medina, Asir and The Yemen, have for centuries past received their pilgrims and their traders; since the earliest days the towns on the Persian Gulf have been visited by merchant-sailors - but within all was dark.

With the travels of Doughty in unexplored Arabia the public at large first woke to the fascination of the country and of its tribes. But only gradually has the veil been lifted. Readers of Gertrude Bell's Letters will recall her journey into the Arabian desert, hoping as she did, to penetrate to Ar-Riyadh - and how she had to turn North-East again for Hail. Philby stayed in Ar-Riyadh for many weeks during his famous journey from the Persian (Arabian) Gulf to the Red Sea, an experience narrated in full in The Heart of Arabia - but Ameen Rihani's is the first really intimate picture given by one who was received by Ibn Sa'oud as a friend and confidant - who went where he listed - saw what he wished to see - learned what was in the hearts of the people and their famous Sultan, and gives us of his knoweldge in this book."
