This is a CDV of a Union Army officer listed as missing in action at Spotsylvania, May 10, 1864 and then presumed killed in action. He is John C. White, Company D, 49th New York Vols. White was enrolled August 1, 1861 at Buffalo, N.Y. as Private and promoted to Corporal Nov. 1, 1861; Sergeant, May 9, 1862 and then mustered as 2nd Lieutenant. September 7, 1863. The 49th N.Y. was a 6th Corps Regiment in the Army of the Potomac. It lost 15 officers and 111 enlisted men killed in action or died of wounds; 5 officers and 174 enlisted men died of disease, wounds or in prisons. Fox does not list the number of men wounded/recovered. The 49th N.Y. participated in most of the battles of the 6th Corps, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Spotsylvania. The CDV is signed in manuscript ink by John C. White. He is shown seated wearing an overcoat and holding his sword point down in his left hand. His kepi shows the infantry insignia with the numerals "49" seen with a strong magnifier. The card is backmarked "Barcalow, 76 Bowery, New York". It is in good to very good condition. The corners are a trifle rounded. The upper left corner is bumped and has a stain which does not affect the image. Contrast is excellent. This is a very nice CDV of a missing in action, listed as killed officer of a regiment which saw extensive Civil War action. Successful bidder to pay $4.00 First Class shipping and handling.
