IN CORAL ISLES

By E.H. Gates

REVIEW AND HERALD PUBLISHING ASSN.

Washington, D.C.

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. SOUTH BEND, IND.

Copyright, 1923, by the

Review and Herald Publishing Association

Hardbound in very good condition, 256 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE, CONTENTS, ILLUSTRATIONS (50+) and an INTRODUCTION, measures approximately 5 ½" x 7 ¾", no dust jacket.

The boards are covered in green cloth with titles blind stamped in gold on the spine and cover. They are straight out to the corner tips with slight soiling but no stains. Edge wear is modest, noted mostly at the corner tips, but no worn through areas and no fraying or fading.

The interior reveals contents to be clean and firmly bound with hinges completely intact. Age toning is noted consistent to the date of publication with the text and illustrations still bright and unblemished. There is a simple dedication on the fly page, but no further ownership indications, no marks, creases or tears.

The Seventh-Day Adventists began to introduce their interpretation of the Christian gospel to the Polynesian Islands in 1876. By 1890 their first missionary ship, the Pitcairn had been built and was launched from San Diego, California with a small band of 6 missionaries on board bound for Pitcairn Island; among them, the Author and his wife.

"As soon as we were able, we went on deck to escape the odor of cooking food, which produced nausea, but were not able to escape seasickness. I felt very uncomfortable, but was not sick enough to pay tribute to Neptune, though I was very anxious to do so."

The author spent many years in the South Pacific overseeing many of their missions. He was a devoutly religious man who provides insights into his beliefs, interpretations of the Pacific Island people that they encounter, the islands and their cultures. His manner of writing however, goes a bit lightly on intense moralizing that many of the missionary writings so freely purport. Although not written as a journal, it is presented in chronological order with the dates and times frequently furnished to the reader.

Complimented by many photos, the majority of which are full page plates that include mission members and local Islanders, this is an informative and pleasant flowing documentary of the Seventh Day Adventist mission progress in the South Seas around the turn to the century and beyond. Although their conversion efforts did not commence as early as some of the other Christian denominations they targeted a number of areas that had not be previously been focused on.

Elder Gates, communicates well descriptions of the islands and includes several verses from his own pen. Although having been published a bit later than many of the missionary writings, IN CORAL ISLES is well written and contains much of value on the Pacific Islands.
