INCISED Depose Jumeau - Couture Factory Original Dolls:Antique:Bisque:French
(click picture for more details & pictures)
Offered today is one of my most
cherished French antique dolls from my
personal collection. She is perfect and
of exceptional, exquisite, beauty. This
Jumeau is the earlier and much more
rare and beautiful Incised Depose
Jumeau. These gorgeous dolls were only
manufactured between the years of 1886
to 1889. She stands 20 inches tall. Her
beautiful bisque head is made of very
fine and smooth bisque, the earlier
method of molding was used, which
required hand pressing of the bisque
into the mold. She has the very thin
open crown similar to the Bru dolls.
Her ears are applied after the molding
process which makes them so much more
beautiful and adds exquisite character.
Her beautiful, mesmerizing, eyes are
multi colored blue made of hand blown
glass. She has carefully stroked brows,
lashes and eyeliner with the customary
red dots at the center matching
nostrils and lips. I have rarely seen a
doll with such captivating eyes. She
has the soft earlier look of the EJ and
Portrait dolls. Her lips are two toned
with the beautiful light line
separating the lips. She has a perfect
bisque head, no chips, hairlines or
cracks. She is marked in the correct
Incised fashion: DEPOSE 9 with a red
"L" mark below which was used prior to
the checks and "x" marks.
She is wearing her factory original,
Ernestine Jumeau, Couture clothing. She
is all original right down to her shoes
which have the correct impressed
factory stamp which reads: JUMEAU
DEPOSE and the letter 9. On her right
foot she has the correct paper factory
stamp applied to the sole of her shoe
which reads "Made in France." She has
two slips pantalettes and socks. She
has a gorgeous matching elaborate
bonnet.
Her fingers have unfortunately been
exposed to some moisture at some time,
and have paint removed, other than this
and normal wear to the body - she is
exquisitely perfect. This is not
considered a damage as all fingers are
there, however, I must tell you about
it. There may be a slight earring rub
to her left ear, however, it does not
appear to be a flake.
She has her beautiful factory original
mohair blonde wig and factory pate.
This doll is truly a factory couture
original early Incised Depose Jumeau
doll. Her value is nearly impossible to
estimate as so few of these dolls
survived and in such incredible
condition. I have, therefor, priced her
accordingly. I have seen these dolls
sell for much more than I am asking,
however, I am open to any questions or
comments. The reason that I am selling
is due to extreme medical needs of
family members or I never would part
with this doll, she is absolutely a
work of early French art.
You never know who the artist was back
in the 1880's who helped bring life to
these wonderful early bisque dolls,
however, it is well known that
"starving" French artists often went to
the doll factories when they were broke
and need immediate cash. You can always
tell, however, when a doll stands out
in a group of similar dolls of the same
period, this is such a doll.
Her factory original Jumeau body is
made of the customary wood a
composition design. She has the earlier
straight wrists and the Jumeau factory
blue stamp on her lower back which
reads very clearly: Jumeau Medaille
D'or Paris.
Finally, I should mention that I
believe this doll to be one of the very
earliest Incised Depose Jumeau dolls
made in 1886, hand selected by
Ernestine Jumeau herself for couturier
garments, due to her exceptional
beauty. it is well documented that
Ernestine took exceptional pride in
selecting the dolls for the factory
Couture dressmakers. Also facts for
consideration: her head is pressed and
not poured; the beautiful, applied
ears; and finally, she has the earlier
Jumeau soft look and body. This is a
very rare doll. Wouldn't you rather
have one exceptional Jumeau doll that
was hand selected and all factory
original than several of the later
dolls created in assembly line fashion?
This doll continues to impress and
mesmerize years after meeting her. [119]
