VERY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1792 EDITION OF: "SKETCHES CHIEFLY RELATING TO THE HISTORY, RELIGION, LEARNINIG, AND MANNERS, OF THE HINDOOS." This important 18th century treatise was written by Quintin Craufurd and printed for T. Cadell, London. Authoritative work contains author's revealing chronicle of the "Hindoos" along with "A concise Account of the Present State of the Native Powers of Hindostan." This esteemed second edition of author's vivid account of India is much expanded over the first edition (1790), and is a far superior work. [The present treatise was expanded to include almost 300 more pages than the previous edition, including 19 pages of index and errata sheet]. This is also the first edition to include Mr. Bogle's Tibetian account, and a First Edition thus.

"It is not my intention in the following sheets, to add to the numbers of authors who have devoted their labours to the history of the conquerors of Hindustan; but to draw the attention of the Public, for a moment, away from the exploits of Mahomedans and Europeans, and direct it to the original inhabitants of that country. If this attempt should lead to further inquiry upon so interpreting a subject, or be productive of any pleasure or information to the Reader, i shall think my pains well bestowed, as my wishes will be accomplished." [The Author].

Quintin Craufurd (1743-1819) was a noted British author who went to India early in life, where he entered the service of the East India Company. Returning to Europe before the age of forty with a sizable fortune, he settled in Paris, where he devoted himself to the cultivation of literature and art, and formed an exceptional library and collection of paintings, coins and other objects of antiquarian interest. Craufurd was on intimate terms with the French court, especially with Marie Antoinette, and was one of those who arranged the flight to Varennes. He escaped to Brussels, but in 1792 he returned to Paris with the hope of rescuing the royal prisoners. He lived among the French émigrés until the peace of Amiens made it possible to return to Paris. Through Talleyrand's influence he was able to remain in Paris after the war was renewed, and he died there. Craufurd's lifelong interest in the India later prompted a second work on the subject, titled "Researches concerning the Laws, Theology, Learning and Commerce of Ancient and Modern India" (1817).

Hindoston is a term used to represent the people of India or the Indian subcontinent. India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia which is the 7th largest country by geographical area, the 2nd most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of about (4,671 miles. It is bordered by Pakistan to the west, the People's Republic of China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia in the Indian Ocean.

Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated there, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early 18th century and colonized by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread nonviolent resistance.

Today India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. It has the world's 12th largest economy at market exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing power. Economic reforms since 1991 have transformed it into one of the world's fastest growing economies; however, it still suffers from high levels of poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition. A pluralistic, multilingual, and multi-ethnic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
