The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction, print of an incredible 1881 Irish American lithograph featuring portraits of Charles Stuart Parnell and eighteen other heroes of Ireland’s Land War during one of the important periods in the History of Ireland. The Irish Land League was focusing the eyes of the world on the plight of Ireland’s tenant farmers and calls for land reform were the league’s primary cause. In the center of the piece is a magnificent portrait of Charles Stuart Parnell, often referred to as the “uncrowned King of Ireland”, who was the Irish Land League President. At the very top of the print is a shield with a banner featuring Parnell’s name and an Irish wolfhound in the center. Above the shield is a woman bearing a laurel wreath and carrying The Green Flag commonly used to represent Ireland at the time. At the bottom left an elderly man and a woman carrying a child seek protection from an allegorical woman carrying a standard. In front of these people, just below the left side of the ribbon, are the bones of those martyred during the events. On the right bottom a man with a sword and another Green Flag points to a city while rows of soldiers are seen at the very bottom right.

CIRCLE OF HEROES: Those whose portraits and names surrounding Parnell are (Starting at the top and going clockwise) J. J. O’Kelly; P. J. Sheridan; O’Connor Power; T. Brennan, T. M. Healy, M.P.; A. M. Sullivan, M. P.; Lalor; (Note: we continue completely around the circle and list those at the bottom at the end of the list) John Dillon, M. P.; O’Gorman Mahon; Jno. W. Nally; Thos. Sexton, M.P.; J. G. Biggar, M.P.; T. O. Sullivan, Wm. H. O’Sullivan, M. P.; Justin M. McCarthy, M.P. The three men at the bottom, below Dillon’s Portrait, are left to right: T. P. O’Connor, Michael Davitt and R. Eagan. Their names are below each portrait with their spellings as above although one has to keep in mind this lithograph was done in the United States to be sold to Irish-Americans. Some of these men would later be elected to parliament, but may not have the M. P. designation because at the time they were not members when the poster was created.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: 1881 was an important year in the conflicts within Ireland and its relationship with the United Kingdom and of great interest to the millions of Irish-Americans, who though they had left Ireland, had families and friends still living there. This was the period of the Irish Land Wars and the attempt to give poor Irish tenants the land which they tended. Parnell, John Dillon and Michael Davitt traveled to America seeking support and money. Charles Stuart Parnell had already established himself as a power to be reckoned within Parliament. He had organized a powerful block of votes with other MPs from Ireland who were forcing the House of Commons to deal with Irish issues by obstructing its work on other matters. He and his compatriots eventually forged the Home Rule League into an effective, well-disciplined party considered by many to be the first effective party in the House of Commons. Thus, Gladstone was persuaded to enact the Land Act that attempted to deal with the problem.

BANNER AT BOTTOM: there is a ribbon banner that reads “The Cause of Ireland”.

ORIGINAL MEDIA: T.B. Noonan & Co., 21 Boylston St., Boston, Massachusetts produced the original 1881 lithograph on which this new print is based.
