Fine original early glengarry badge for the Carlow Rifles, Irish Militia. This badge is blackened brass with some wear to the original blacking, identified as Figure 1269 in Kipling & King. It consists of a strap inscribed "ERIN GO BRAGH" (top) and a lower inscribed "CARLOW RIFLES" surmounted by the Victorian Crown. In the center of the design is the Maid of Erin harp. Two stout brass lugs to the reverse (east & west) for attaching to the glengarry. This is a beautifully crafted piece, being rolled or slightly curved from side to side and making the badge stand out farther than usual. In 1881, the Carlow Rifles became the 8th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. A well-kept treasure from my collection of many years, guaranteed authenticity as always. Overall condition extra fine. A rare opportunity to add an exquisite badge. This will be the last Irish Militia cap badge I offer for some time, although I will be posting some Militia collar badges as well as more fine Irish military collectibles.
