IRISH PRINT POSTER JAUNTING CAR HORSE IRELAND
Here's a great new print of a turn-of-the-century photochrom, done in 1890, featuring a view features a classic Irish Jaunting Car, also known as an outside car, as it travels through the Irish countryside with a young couple on it.
These jaunting cars are unusual because the seats are above the wheels and facing outwards. Irish legend credits their use by the Knights of Erin who battled in chariots with this seating arrangement.
The text at the bottom reads: Irish Jaunting Car - Irish Countryside - 1890.
The photochrom process was developed in Switzerland and gained huge popularity in the 1890s and early 1900s. The process was a combination of photography and lithography that resulted in stunning images that have the clarity of photographs and the intensity of hand painted images. During the process a black-and-white photo was hand colored. Then using a series of colored stone plates, many times more than 14 stones, a color print could be reproduced. Now, more than a hundred years later we are still left with intense and unique images.
This new print is on a very high-quality 100# glossy text paper. The actual image measures 10.5 inches wide X 15.5 inches high. The paper size is 11 inch wide x 17 inches high. Therefore, it has a small border to allow for framing. When matted, this size is perfect for a standard 16-inch x 20-inch frame, a manageable size for a variety of decorating purposes.
