This book is a second ISHI book I have in my personal collection of hundreds of archery and outdoor lifestyle books. "Ishi in Two Worlds" deals primarily from the time in Ishi's life when he was "found" nearly dead in 1911 and described as LAST WILD INDIAN. He actually lived for a time as a live display in a museum. He taught Dr. Saxton Pope how to build bows and arrows in the Yahi Indian tradtion and also accompanied Pope and others back to his home territory to teach them how he lived and hunted. The author, Theodora Kroeber is the wife of the researcher who worked closely with Ishi for the remainder of Ishi's life. This book is in good used condition complete with photos.
ISHI means "man" in Ishi's native Yahi language. In his tribe's tradition, he could never speak directly about his dead ancestors or reveal his real name. Ishi's real name was never discovered although he grew very close to many individuals and taught them much about his culture. For nearly 50 years Ishi walked on top of rocks and logs so that the encroaching white men would not locate his tracks. For years, sitings of Indians in the area were reported and many searches were conducted and sometimes "artifacts" and evidence were found. Ishi was only discovered after he wandered onto a farm depressed and ready to die because he was living completely alone. It is a compelling story and is the true start of MODERN ARCHERY!
