(22) DIFFERENT AUTOGRAPHED "COLLEGE COVERS" OF 1959

Commemorating the founding in 1909 of the first all-Jewish city 22 First Day Covers, signed by graduates of Herzlia Hebrew Gymnasium, all later significant figures in the political and cultural life of the State of Israel. Postmarked Tel-Aviv/Jaffa, May 4, 1959. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of Tel Aviv. Each envelope bears an image of Meir Dizengoff, the first Mayor and "founding father" of the City. The year 1904 marked the beginning of the Second Aliyah to Palestine. Symbolic of that new spirit among the early pioneers was the establishment in 1906 of the Gymnasia Herzlia, the first Hebrew secondary school established in Palestine. In 1909, with the establishment of Tel Aviv as the first all-Jewish city in modern times, the School moved from Jaffa to Tel Aviv. This set of First Day Covers signed by graduates of the Gymnasia commemorates the 50th anniversary of its founding in Tel Aviv and of the city itself. Among the signers are Moshe Sharett (Former Prime Minister & 1st Foreign Minister of Israel, Dr. Joseph Berg (Minister of Social Welfare), Katriel Katz (Secretary of the Government, former Israel Minister to Poland & Hungary), Izhar Harari (Leading member of the Knesset), Izhak Olshan (President of the Supreme Court, Jerusalem), Yehudith Hararit (One of the founders of Tel-Aviv), Aharon Danin (The 1st son of Tel-Aviv), Amos Ben-Gurion (Deputy Chief of Israel's Police Force), Shmuel Tankus (Chief of Israel Navy), Aharon Remez (1st Chief of Israel Air-Force), Ephram Ben Arzi (Military Leader in the War of Independence), M. Ben Gal (President, Military Court of Appeals), Dan Tolkowsky (Former Chief Israel Air-Force), Binyamin Tamuz (Sculpturer, Writer, Critic & Editor), Uri Qesari (Leading Critic & Writer), Aharon Amir (Poet, Author & Translator), Mati Meged (Author & Playwright), Abba Elchanani (Noted Architect & Designer), Ahuza Weiss (Painter, 1st girl born in Tel-Aviv), Raphael Klatzkin (A Veteran Habimah & Actor), Shraga Friedman (Habimah Actor & Producer) & Batia Lanzet (Leading Actress in the Cameri Theatre)
