The dust cover and pages are discoloured due to the age of the book. The top of the spine on the dust cover has been ripped off. On the inside front cover and first page of the book is a few thick black mark that have been put through the previous owner’s name.

This is the story of the everyday life of an Australian veterinary surgeon’s wife, who acts as his assistant and general factotum. IT would seem that she has as little private life as the wife of a ‘human doctor’ (as one child so engagingly put it when distinguishing between a doctor and a vet). Indeed she is even worse off, in that she often has to take the patients as temporary boarders in difficult cases. She likes her job, and loves animals. The difficulty arises in being unable to instruct them to say ‘Ah’, or ‘Take a deep breath and hold it’, or to ask then where the pain is. Nor is it possible to explain that sometimes one must hurt to heal, though often the animals seem to sense this and are pathetically grateful. Writing with a keen sense of humour, she has many interesting stories to tell of her husband’s patients and their backgrounds. But not all the cases are funny; some are pathetic, and some heartrending-but none is ever dull.
