Forrest Bedford is a Southern lawyer in the late 1950s, generally content with his privileged life. But the winds of change are blowing, and he becomes increasingly involved with civil rights cases. Collection #1. SEASON ONE. "PILOT" This is the stellar two-hour movie pilot which introduces the characters, including Forrest Bedford and Lilly Harper. "THE HAT" Lilly must confront her own sense of right and wrong when her daughter finds and becomes attached to John-Morgan's beloved cowboy hat. Forrest investigates the case of Prentiss Carver, a black man accused of assaulting a white police officer. “RULES OF THE GAME” With Forrest away on a weekend hunting trip with dark political overtones, womanhood takes aim at Francie. "AMAZING GRACE" Lilly takes her first steps into the Civil Rights movement when she attends a voting-rights meeting. Her possession of a voting-rights pamphlet causes some trouble for her and her friends. Francie reads Lilly's journal. Forrest agrees to run for Attorney General, but only on his terms. "ALL GOD'S CHILDREN" Forrest meets his campaign manager, who has some hard questions for him. John-Morgan does not understand why he's not being invited to Lilly's 30th birthday party. Friction develops on the wrestling ream when Coach brings in a black student.

MORE SEASON ONE. “ALICE OAKLEY DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE” Forrest lassos a witness and then tightens the rope; Slocum’s father kicks him out of the house. “ON THE ROAD” On a campaign swing, Forrest lobbies for the affections of a difficult Francine, while Lilly faces a difficult test registering to vote. "MASTER MAGICIAN" Lilly faces opposition to her decision to vote, including pressure from her minister. Election night holds many surprises for Forrest, especially when he discovers that Collection #4. END OF SEASON ONE. “SLOW DARK COMING” Racial tensions heat up with the department store boycott, leaving Lilly’s cousin Oscar out in the cold. "TOY SOLDIERS" Francie carelessly terrorizes John-Morgan with a childish prank. Tucker carries on an affair with a young campaign worker. Lilly and Forrest both witness a shocking police attack on some black children. Rev. Henry invites Forrest to attend a meeting at his church. "THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS" Coach turns up working at a local garage, while fighting to get his job back. Forrest attempts to replace his opposing council in a murder trial, when he judges the man incompetent. Lilly becomes involved with Clarence, a touring R&B sax player. "NOT BURIED" Forrest asks Christina to replace the incompetent opposing council. John-Morgan believes himself responsible for the death of a neighbor. "A DANGEROUS COMFORT" Lewis returns from Collection #5. START OF SEASON TWO. "HELLO AND GOODBYE" Second season premiere! "RULER OF MY HEART" Lilly is questioned by the F.B.I. as part of their investigation into Forrest in his bid for Attorney General. Forrest is less than happy when he hears that Gwen may soon be released from the hospital. Francie stresses out over a party. This episode includes the murder of Col. Landers, a black Air Force officer. This case will dominate the season. We also meet, for the first time, Kyle Cooper, Gil Plaquemine and Jere Blount, the killers. "ALL IN THE LIFE" Gwen is conveniently killed in an automobile accident before being released. The Col. Landers murderers are allowed to go free. Forrest becomes Attorney General. "UNTIL TOMORROW" Francie loses it at Gwen's wake, while John-Morgan acts like a brat. Paul Slocum approaches Evans about getting an abortion. Collection #6. MORE SEASON TWO. "FREEDOM BUS" A young white college student, one of the Freedom Riders, visits the Harpers, leading to some surprising revelations for both of them. Forrest meets Christina in Collection #7. THE END OF SEASON TWO. "REALPOLITIK" Jere Blount testifies before a grand jury. Lilly leads a boycott against a local grocer. Forrest is pressured to drop the Landers case. "SMALL WISHES" While riding Claudia home on his bike, Nathan is busted on a trumped-up narcotics charge. The Landers trial comes to a dramatic end. Rumors about Nathan and Claudia fly all over school. The Landers case brings Forrest national attention. “WHAT’S IN A NAME?” Forrest finds himself being tailed by mysterious cars and his phone tapped. Lilly tries to get an elderly neighbor to register to vote. Nathan is harassed by schoolmates, and Claudia tells him to stay away. "COMMENCEMENT” Forrest angrily confronts Monty about the tail. Forrest tells Christina that he’s being watched. Lilly tries to study for her finals. Claudia and some friends stage a sit-in at the school gym. Forrest meets with Tucker in Washington DC, and learns some disturbing things about the tail. Lilly graduates. “STATE” Joe gives up his railroad job to teach at the community school for the expelled students. Nathan has a disastrous interview with the dean of admissions of Forrest’s alma mater. This was the final regular episode of the series. The final scene of this final episode is especially memorable. As Joe leads the students in the Pledge of Allegiance, we cross-cut to scenes of the National Guard leading black students into the university, while Forrest and Nathan look on. |
