Indium is a very soft, malleable, silvery metal - soft enough to be cut with scissors. It is unaffected by air and water. Melting at only 156°C, indium is a component of a number of interesting low melting point alloys, including one (24% In, 76% Ga) which is liquid at room temperature. Indium is a very rare element and occurs in no economically viable ores, being recovered instead as a by-product of some zinc and lead ores. Native indium has been found in Russia but only as microscopic inclusions and is extremely rare. Until recently there was little use for indium, other than low melting point alloys but new applications in electronics have resulted in steadily rising prices in recent years.
