Interesting Bronze Age Dedicated defaced sword 1200 BC

A fascinating historical piece - an ancient European Bronze Age sword dating to approximately 1200 BC, intentionally bent and deformed in ancient times.

The sword is of European form, the long leaf shaped blade with broad central mid-rib and thick protruding tang and the back.  An extremely well made blade.

This magnificent weapon would have been worth a considerable amount in ancient times, yet subsequent to manufacture it was forcefully bent and broken.  Whilst this may seem bizarre, it is in fact a striking representation of Ancient Celtic/Bronze Age religious belief.  This sword would have been buried as a votive offering to a particular God, probably on a hilltop to the presiding deity.  As a symbol that this expensive weapon was intended solely for the God, it was 'made redundant' - segmented and bent so it could never again be used as a sword.  This is a practice well known amongst the Celts and other Bronze age peoples.

Length: 6 3/8 inches.
