I found this to be an entertaining, amusing, and yet touching letter. Writing to his son Jerome, who, against his father's wishes, had recently left Yale University in order to enlist in the Army, attorney John F. McGee of Minneapolis, Minnesota, sent this letter Special Delivery for fear that his son would not receive it prior to his embarking for France. The father addresses a number of topics, to include money sent to him ($200), his hope that his son return to Yale following the war, and some additional small talk. Of particular interest is the following father-son admonition: "This is perhaps the last comminication you will have from me before you sail. I have suffiicient confidence in you to know that it is unnecessary for me to warn you against the pitfalls and dangers army life, and that too in a strange land. I assume that the nature of your work will be so urgent that you will have but little time for social duties." Let's jump ahead a bit. It's evident that Jerome received the letter as well as the money before his departure. It's further evident that he decided to whoop it up a bit before leaving: Note the backside of the very envelope that contained his father's letter, where we find the autographs of Lillian Griffith and Elsie Froehlich, two young actresses who performed in the "Passing Show of 1917," staged at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City. (By way of interest, Froehlich went on to become fairly famous on the Broadway stage, largely in musical comedy, I believe.) So much for seeing to his "social duties"! The tone of the letter seems somewhat stiff, almost business-like: "If you will keep in mind the anxiety that you must know we will have on your account, you will not fail to write us often." He closes the correspondence with "Your father," and signs it formally "J.F. McGee." But touchingly, clearly as an afterthought, he writes an over-size and double-underlined "Good-bye." Good stuff! The two sheet measure 8 1/2" x 11" and are in remarkably fine condition, showing no stains or tears, though there are envelope creases. The original envelope shows some staining and wear. Buyer pays $1.00 postage/handling. Georgia residents add 6% sales tax. |
