Bergamot is an aristocrat in the citrus family. Fresh citrus combined with some fresh, fruity appeal. Definitely more exotic than your average citrus oils!

Blends well with sandalwood, ylang ylang, jasmine and cedarwood.

Botanical Name: Citrus bergamia
Plant Part: Crude Fruit peel
Extraction Method: Cold Press
Origin: Italy
Description: The tree can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers, and smooth leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit but in a pear-shape. The fruit ripens from green to yellow.
Color: Greenish yellow
Common Uses: Bergamot essential oil can be used in the treatment of depression, stress, tension, fear, hysteria, infection (all types including skin), anorexia, psoriasis, eczema and general convalescence

Blends well with: Black Pepper, Clary sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Mandarin, Nutmeg, Orange, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang.
Aromatic Scent: The aroma of the essential oil is basically citrus, yet fruity and sweet with a warm spicy floral quality, and is reminiscent of Neroli and Lavender oil.
History: The name Bergamot is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy where the oil was first sold. This tree is native to South East Asia but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy, but is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.
Cautions: Bergamot oil can cause severe burns when used on sensitive skin that has been exposed to sunlight due to the high bergaptene content.

Bergamot, a small citrus tree, is good for skincare preparations. It has a fresh citrus aroma which has a stabilizing effect on the emotions. This light, uplifting fragrance blends well with other essential oils. It is often used in the treatment of acne, abscesses, anxiety, boils, cold sores, cystitis, depression, halitosis, itching, loss of appetite, oily skin, psoriasis, and stress.

Safety Precautions: Do not use if the area of application will be exposed to sunlight for 24 hours due to its photo toxicity.

Traditional Use: Aptly titled Bergamot after the city of Bergamo, Italy where most of its trade originated. Traditionally used as a potent medicine and sold for its scent. Its popularity carried over to the Chinese where it was administered with their traditional healing protocols.

Potential uses and benefits: In a diffuser it produces an uplifting, refreshingly astringent atmosphere. This may assist in reducing anxiety and depression. As an ingredient in lotions and massage oils it can help reduce tension and inflammation. Well-diluted in a facial or body oil, Bergamot's anti-septic and anti-fungal properties can be helpful for acne, and problem skin conditions. A few drops in a sitz bath or regular bath can also be beneficial. It is very popular as a perfume ingredient both in commercial and home recipes.

Blends Well With: Most essential oils, particularly Lavender, the Mints, woody base note oils like Vetiver, Sandalwood and Frankincense.

Used in body powders, bath products, facial steams, masks, herbal wraps, massage oils, bath oils, healing salves, potpourri, aromatherapy and more!
