Recorded at Groove Masters, Santa Monica, California. After two albums in which his songwriting had become increasingly more politically oriented, Jackson Browne returned here (mostly) to his more familiar brand of introspective folk/pop/rock. The title song is an exception; over a stark, guitar-driven backing (much harder and more alternative-sounding than Browne had ever previously attempted), the singer meditates on what he sees as hollowness in America's soul (with harmony vocal courtesy of ALLY MCBEAL singing star Vonda Shepard). Elsewhere, there's a Dylan-esque ode to Browne's struggling years, and an attack on big media, "Information Overload," with a worldbeat feel. Other highlights are an extremely hooky pop song ("I'm the Cat"), and an uplifting reggae tune, "It is One," bemoaning the world's lack of unity.

In his last album, he had to tell us he was alive; here, he proves it. - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (02/16/1996)
