You are bidding on an excellent condition professionally reproduced black & white 8” x 10” photo of a 1929 CONCRETE PAVING SPREAD CONSISTING OF A JAEGER 21E CONCRETE PAVER AND A LAKEWOOD CONCRETE FINISHER. This is a professionally reproduced photo from my personal collection, the original vintage photo being taken by my grandfather in 1929 on the Dorr Street paving job in Toledo, Ohio.
PAVING SPREAD OPERATION: The JAEGER 21E concrete paver was a very popular model in its day. Gasoline engine powered and crawler mounted, this portable concrete paver worked between the steel paving forms. Batch trucks hauled 2 batches of sand and stone from a nearby off-site batch plant to the job. Removing 2 sections of 10’ road forms, the batch truck would then back up to the paver, dumping one batch of aggregate at a time into the cable-controlled “skip” of the paver. Bagged cement in 92# bags was piled on the near side of the forms, then carried to the skip by laborers and broken open over a horizontal bar on the skip, spreading over the sand and stone. As the batch truck pulled ahead, the paver operator would raise the skip, dumping the dry concrete mixture into the rotating drum. Water was then added in the rotating drum, piped by hose from a local water supply (often a well drilled for the job). After a timed mixing cycle, the concrete would be transferred into the waiting hopper bucket, the bucket was run out the horizontal boom, and dumped between the forms. The batch truck would have lowered his box from the first batch, a laborer would trip the batch board dividing the 2 batches, and he would be ready to back into the waiting skip for another cycle. The steel form-riding concrete finisher in this photo is a LAKEWOOD, gasoline engine powered. Hand laborers would strike off the concrete. Final finishing was by hand, cement masons cutting transverse joints, and “bull floats” were used for the final finish. As the concrete began to harden the concrete was cured either with wet burlap, or as in this photo water would be ‘ponded’ on the slab, held back by dirt hand shoveled along the edges. As you can see, concrete paving in the 1929 was quite labor intensive. This photo was taken in 1929 on Dorr Street in Toledo, Ohio on a city street job being built by the McKechnie-Peirce Company of Toledo. My grandfather, Raymond Peirce, was a partner in the McKechnie-Peirce Company, an early builder of railroads and city streets.
HISTORY: McKechnie-Peirce was the predecessor to The Peirce Construction Company, a prominent heavy/highway contractor operating in a 4-state area from 1921 to 1982, based in the Toledo suburb of Holland, Ohio. Peirce performed interstate highway work including earth moving and concrete paving, major city streets, deep sewer and sewer tunnel work, heavy waterlines, site work, and flood control. I was a partner in the company from 1961-1982. When work dried up in our market in 1980, we elected to quit the construction industry, finish our work and liquidated. At the time we were doing a volume of $30 million a year with 325 employees. Forke Bros. held 3 equipment auctions for us in 4 days as we finished our work.
