Written by the artist
Since childhood I've been exposed to the
image of Jesus Christ.
Usually bloody, and nailed to a cross. I
was taught that he is the savior of mankind. I was also taught he was
the son of God, and God himself. I was taught to drink his blood, and
eat his flesh. I was taught that he came from a virgin birth. And now,
more often than naught, I am taught that he existed only as a man, or
that he did not exist at all.
I have had a long and serious relationship
with this man. I have thought of him often for year upon year. Almost
obsessively. Yet still, I don't know who he is, or what he is, or if "he
is", at all.
I have spent hours speaking with him, though
even as I spoke, I did not know if I was talking to him or to myself.
I have asked him many questions, and asked him for many things. He has
never answered me with a voice, though I sometimes perceive that in some
way, I am answered. Is this a delusion?
I have an idea that he is used by men to
control other men. ("men" used generically for "human beings")
Something, or someone, should stand for
what we have come to believe is good and noble in us. I think that this
has been useful.
However, in a time when one person can control
the fate of millions, dogma and blind faith can be a serious danger to
humanity as a species.
Take the example of one "true believer"
in the Mohammedan religion, coming to America with a suitcase nuke to
fight a "Holy War" for Allah.
This is the same type dogma that Christians
believe, only different, (and perhaps, not so different)
In times when destructive technologies are
available for use by individuals, can we afford to tolerate the faithful?
Science disputes his existence. Twenty First
Century Common sense dictates that the existence of God is foolishness.
And yet, there is a burning desire in me
that wants these "fairy tales" about goodness, and righteousness,
and a everlasting soul living beyond this world to be true.
What a shame if all there is to us is this
short and mostly superficial life of ours. What a disappointment.
In my home, and in my studio, I have many
images of the Christ. Also, Buddha, and other persons said to be inspired
from things beyond this short life span.
Even my own father, long dead, I relate to
as if he were still alive. I carry on conversations with all of these
people. Some would think me mad. And in a way, I must agree. Is it madness
to believe in something that is logically and scientifically disputed?
Is it mad to believe in magic and miracles? Is it crazy to think that
there is anything more to us than this struggle we call our "life"?
If I were to live 1000 years I doubt I could
be certain of the most simple question of anything pertaining to life
beyond death. Perhaps that is as it should be? Perhaps that is the plan?
Perhaps there's nothing to know? Jesus Christ represents all these questions
to me.

What do you see in my art? How does it
make you feel? I hope that it will carry you to a place somewhere
near where it takes me. Another world. I love my work, and what I
truly want to do in this life, is make more of it.
Art is an integral and vital element necessary for the
invention of civilization.
Creating art seems to have no purpose other then to
reach a deep yearning of the human spirit ... A deep need to 'create',
to externalize our ideas. With art we emulate God. We want to create
our own worlds, just like God. We can not command the seas to rise
or the mountains to move ... but we can draw or paint them any way
we wish. Through art we create our own worlds.
This need in us, so unique to us, is a prerequisite
to the foundation of all the worlds cultures. All that man has accomplished,
the domination of the planet, all can be traced back to our need to
create art.
Most of us grow older and become set in our ways, slowly
growing blind to the beauty that life offers. The magic that we believed
in as children fades into foggy memory, then dies. The hardness of
life makes it difficult to keep open eyes and open minds. We become
fixated on simple and superficial goals. We become weak.
I struggle to maintain my simple faiths in the face
of inhumanity, horror and the randomness of tragedy. It is increasingly
difficult to remember and believe in the magic that I once took for
granted. I try to hold on to that in spite of the kicks that life
hands out ... and to inspire others in that way, through the creation
of my art.
My art is the kind that you stare into,
and see many things. It is a mirror. Your interpretation of this work
is a direct reflection of who you are. It is art of many meanings
to many people.
Most of my work grows from a single stroke.
It is spontaneous. My need to paint and draw began as, and remains
a "catharsis". An unplanned way to express feelings and
thoughts. Thus, It is not an intellectual process.
Having 'ART' in your home is important.
There is a huge difference in the quality of life between those who
do, and those who do not. If you do not buy my art, I strongly suggest
