JIM GILBERT

Author, Teacher, Artist, Naturalist & Fisherman
April 8, 1932 - November 14, 2000

For thirty years Jim Gilbert was an active artist working mainly in the art form of the Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations. He worked in most coastal aboriginal Art styles with artistic production ranging from original graphics, limited and open edition prints, carvings in wood, ivory and stone to hand engraved and sculptured jewelry pieces in silver and gold.

Jim was raised in Brentwood Bay on Saanich Inlet. His early fishing and hunting partners were First Nations people. That, along with the influence of his father's work in North Coast First Nations art insured Jim's lifelong affinity to the culture. Jim was trained informally for a number of years under a traditional Kwagulth Art apprenticeshipwith the Hunt family of Victoria, working with and for Tony Hunt and his Gallery, Arts of the Raven. Jim felt very priviledged to have the opportunity to learn the basics from Henry Hunt, Master carver and to dance at Henry's funeral potlatch. All Jim's pieces are his own original designs.

January 2000 saw Volume 1 of a two-volume publication called "Learning by Designing" also co-authored by Jim Gilbert and Karin Clark. The book is key to deciphering historic pieces of native artwork. The styles of design within the 800 plus illustrations in the book are used to match styles to coastal native artworks.

Over the years, Jim was commissioned by a number of First Nations people to produce carvings and silver jewelry to be used for ceremonial activities. These pieces have been used foe ceremonial activities. These pieces have been used within the Haida, Salish and Kwagulth (Kwakwaka'wakw) Nations.

Jim's styling can be directly related to Pacific Northwest Native Indian Art. The Pacific Northwest Coast ranges from southern Alaska, British Columbia & the Northern tip of Washington State. Four art styles can be visual referenced through art styles within the Pacific Northwest Coast & this includes 15 main native territories. The North Coast art style includes Tlingit , Tahltan , Nisga's , Kaigani Haida , Haida , Gitksan Coast Tsimshian , Haisla , Nuxalk and Heiltsuk (from Vancouver Island to Alaska including the Queen Charlottes). The Mid Coast art style includes Kwakwawaka'wakw & Oweekeno (Northern Vancouver Island & opposing mainland.) The West Coast art style includes the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Makah (Southwest Coast of Vancouver Island). The South Coast art style is primarily Salish (Southeast Coast of Vancouver Island & Vancouver area.)
