JS 1940 Mexico Taxco Sterling Overlay Pin Brooch Pendan

Pin brooch and pendant in excellent vintage condition, hand made in sterling silver in Taxco in about 1940. It was signed in script JS in a circle, before this artist used the eagle marks which he used after 1948. He is listed several times in the reference book: BILLE HOUGART'S sourcebook titled, THE LITTLE BOOK OF MEXICAN SILVER TRADE AND HALLMARKS, (2006 EDITION) and used three different eagle marks but this pin brooch was made prior to the Eagle, prior to 1948, in the heart of the Art Deco period. It’s also signed .925, sterling, Taxco along with the circle with the script JS inside. I found other pieces signed exactly as he signed this one, attributed to 1940.

This is a charming pin brooch using overlay technique to perfection depicting a man with a bow and arrow shooting at a running rabbit. The shape of the pin brooch is much like an artist’s palette without the hole for the thumb, a graceful shape concave from the back, convex from the front view. The bale is thick and round and large enough for a very heavy chain and the locking clasp is in fine condition. There’s some tarnish and a few stains on the silver which one should be able to buff off if you wanted. I have owned it for several decades and bought it as an old piece. It is about 2-3/8” wide and about 1-1/2” high. Weight 15 grams. It’s got a nice smooth substantial feel to it, great to the hand. Very attractive piece; it's fun, makes me smile, I hope you'll enjoy as much as I have enjoyed it.
