The shells of Ammonites were curved much like a ram's horn and the fossils demonstrate intricate curved chambers. They propelled themselves through the dark early seas by filling the chambers of their shells with air filtered from gills and squirting jets of water. Because Ammonites lived in marine environments, their presence also indicates the location of prehistoric seas and they often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods.
