Jack Bohemia was born early last century near Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, of Jaru & Gooniyandi descent, and was initiated as a Gooniyandi man. For much of his life, until he retired in around 1975, he worked with the WA Police as a tracker, apprehending thieves & murderers, finding lost people, and forcibly removing sick Aboriginal people to hospital.
Jack's work experiences were often extremely violent, and this book contains much that will surprise and horrify, including Jack's own remorse-filled admission of murder. His story is contentious not only because it records the experiences of someone who some might consider to have been a traitor to his own people, but because the role of the Aboriginal police tracker confounds many current stereotypes of Aboriginal - white interaction.
