Leos Janacek was a composer of great depth. A sensitive soul who was creatively connected to just about everything in life, Janacek acquired his compositional inspiration from literature, nature, and women (!). The two string quartets on this disc offer the listener extraordinary examples of his musical gifts. The First Quartet, written in one week in 1923, was based on a Tolstoy story, "The Kreutzer Sonata." The Quartet focuses specifically on a character from the story who is full of sorrow and emotionally damaged. The opening motif of the first movement is a heart-wrenching rising line contrasted by a rhythmical folk line. The second movement combines different string techniques that convey the restlessness and utter desperation of the Tolstoy character. The third movement is steeped in angst, and the concluding movement is a summation of the character's miserable existence, and we hear the return of the first movement rising motif. Janacek's Second String Quartet, subtitled 'Intimate Letters,' is said to have been a musical representation of his love for Kamila Stosslova, a woman 38 years his junior. Indeed, passion, lyricism, and undulating rhythms inhabit each movement. The Guarneri Quartet plays both of these complex and extremely beautiful works exquisitely.
