This IS NOT an original Bertha Lum, however we have tried to recreate a faithful facsimile.
Bertha Lum Boynton was a printmaker, painter and illustrator. Born in Tipton, IA in May 1869. Bertha Bull left Duluth, MN in 1895 for five years of study in Chicago at the AIC and Holme Art School. In 1903, Bertha married Bert Lum, a corporate lawyer, and persuaded him to travel to Japan on their honeymoon. After that time she often returned to the Orient to study under various masters and to exhibit.
Bertha Lum made a significant contribution to the Japonisme movement with her woodblock prints and paintings. Lum's prints combine sinuous Art-Nouveau curves with flat planes of color that harken back to 19th century ukiyo-e. Perhaps because she was a foreigner and could only experience Asian life on the outside, Lum envisioned Asia as an exotic, magical place full of lantern light, swirling smoke, and smiling women, a vision which still appeals to viewers today. After a divorcée in the 1920s she led a vagabond existence with studios in San Francisco, Peking and Japan. She died in Genoa, Italy in February 1954. |
PLEASE READ ENTIRELY BEFORE YOU BID:
This is a modern reproduction print, done on a professional quality large format ink jet printer. The original prints were created over a 100 years ago. Most were multi layer prints or lithographs, which have a distinctive pixilated and grainy look. Because of this, keep in mind: the colors are muted and the images have a antique and grainy quality.
Here is an example of the background at 100%

OLD LOOKS OLD: The small version photo at the top of the page shows this image much crisper than in actual size ( or in real life). Please examine the background and notice the grainy quality of the original print and the fact that the background has faded areas of color. Also not that the lines are not clean. This is a result of the original printing process NOT the reproduction.
BEFORE YOU BID PLEASE continue reading.... If this look pleases you by all means please bid, if not please look at some of our other selections.
We want you to be happy with your print.(and offer a 100% money back guarentee to prove it!) We have added this extra notice because even though the vast majority of our customers LOVE these prints, some people have been dissapointed. This has largely been a result of people not reading the description fully or understanding the original of antique printing process and its results.
Original Reproductions of Bertha Lum (modern prints made from her original plates) cost $1000's of dollars and the orginal Bertha lums in the tens of thousands. We simply love her work and want to provide a reasonably priced alternative for others to enjoy. Thanks for taking the time to read this - enjoy your print.

All monitors register color differently. Every effort is made to ensure accurate rendering of artwork; however, there may be some difference due to the technology. Most people comment that the colors are vivid while the images are softer and more rich than a typical glossy poster.
