"Theory and Technique of Playwriting"
by John Howard Lawson
(G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1936)
RARE 1st Edition, 3rd Printing

"The most discerning, the most complete and the best written exposition of the art of playwriting.  It is a brilliant and exhaustive study of the social and philosophical ideas which have dictated the subject matter of plays in all ages (especially our own); the psychology of the dramatist in reacting to his subject matter; the rules whereby dramatic structure and value are achieved and a PLAY is created; and the reasons why the great plays of all eras (especially the significant plays of today) succeeded or failed - dramatically, technically, intellectually or emotionally."  A fantastic collector's item!

Hardcover in original jacket.  "Third Impression" is stated on the copyright page.  $2.75 price is intact on jacket.  Jacket has aged moderately well but shows some signs of wear.  Some light rubbing and tiny tears on some corners with miniscule paper loss, small closed tear in center of spine, some light toning throughout, tips of flap corners have been clipped (presumably by the printer), but no text has been affected.  Book is in VERY GOOD- condition and is square and tightly bound with crisp pages inside.  Original navy blue cloth-bound boards with titles in yellow, some light rubbing on corners, some rippling on spine cloth, some faint dusting on boards, back board fans out slightly at outside corners.  Pages have faded dark top stain and are clean aside from some faint toning and foxing on the end pages and page edges.  No stray marks or inscriptions from previous owners.

This book is in great shape for its age and it would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

About FlatSigned Rare Books
What does flatsigned mean? Back to Top
The world s best-selling author, Stephen King, accidentally coined the term flatsigned. King needed to differentiate whether he should sign only his name (flatsigned) or inscribe the book to an individual.

In talking with his office, I found out that Mr. King incorrectly believed that this term was being used in the book-collecting world. At that time, it was not a term used in the industry. Frustratingly, there was no true distinctive term given to books inscribed to a previous owner or those signed on bookplates then stuck into a book versus those just signed by the author, or flatsigned.
