John Marshall and Alexander Hamilton: Architects of the American Constitution, by Samuel J. Konefsky (NY: Macmillan Co. 1964), signed and inscribed first edition, 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" red cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket (preserved in a Brodart archival sleeve), gilt lettering to spine, viii, 274pp. Association copy: From the library of political science professor and author Sidney Warren (1917 - 2008), an expert on the American presidency. Minor rubbing, bumping and edgewear to covers. Inscribed and signed by the author and his wife, Roma, on the front free-endpaper, dated in the year of the book's issue. Otherwise, a very good+ to near fine copy - clean, bright and tight - in an edgeworn but still good+ dust jacket, well preserved
About the author: Samuel J. Konefsky was born in Russia in 1915, and came to the United States at the age of 11. In 1937 he graduated with honors from Brooklyn College. In 1938 he received his M.A. from Columbia University and in 1944 his Ph.D. from Columbia. He served as professor of political science at Columbia and Brooklyn College, specializing in American government, constitutional law and political philosophy.
In addition to these this work, Konefsky wrote The Constitutional World of Mr. Justice Frankfurter: Some Representative Opinions (Macmillan 1949) and The Legacy of Holmes and Brandeis: a Study in the Influence of Ideas (Macmillan 1957). Konefsky died in 1970.
About the inscription: Samuel J. Konefsky was severely visually impaired, and his wife, Roma T. Konefsky, accompanied him everywhere to take notes and assist him with his writing. It is therefore Roma's inscription on the front free-endpaper of John Marshall and Alexander Hamilton: Architects of the American Constitution, written to political science Prof. Sidney Warren of San Diego and his wife. Prof. Warren was in a remarkably similar situation - nearly blind, his wife (also a scholar) took notes and assisted him with his academic work and writing (verified by Konefsky's son, also a judicial historian, Prof. Alfred S. Konefsky).
