These set was first published in 1909 in a ten volume set. This 1913 Fifth Edition added more reading material to volume 10, while expanding the Guide section to an entire volume. The purpose is to provide readings so that children can have a thorough knowledge of the classics. Volume 1 begins with "Fairy Tale" type stories, and the reading level matures with the child as he/she journeys through the volumes. A great homeschooling tool or enhancement to any child's library.

These books are in good to excellent condition, very clean and serviceable. Volume one does have a split to the outer cloth at the spine, and a couple of these do have minor cracks in the binding. A few pages are loose in the middle of volume 8. Volume 1 has some names written in pen on the half title page, and a name in pencil on the blank reverse of that page. No other writing or markings found. All in all a nice vintage set.
