"Some times it seems as if I've been in bondage since I was a fetus.  Actually, I was put on the stage two (arrow up "and a half") years after I was born.  I enjoyed it because while I didn't get any affection from my family, I got applause from strangers.  George Jessel gave me my last name, Garland, and I thought of the first name, Judy.  Then I became a thing instead of a person.  And i never wanted to be that.  I just wanted to be Frances Ethel Gumm, lady with a heart."

"There is hardly a time when I wasn't married.  But David Rose, my first husband, was too busy with his little toy trains.  Vincente Minnelli, my second, was too busy for me.  Sid Luft, my third, was in the charm business, then Mark Herron, my fourth husband, was never around.  I used to hear from him once in a while.  I think he called from a phone booth on casters; God knows where he was -- or the phone booth.  I was married to four men and I hardly met any of them."

I knew Marilyn Monroe and loved her dearly.  She asked me for help.  Me!  I didn't know what to tell her.  One night, at a party at Clifton Webb's house, Marilyn followed me from room to room.  "I don't want to get too far away from you," she said.  "I'm scared."  I told her, "We're all scared.  I'm scared, too."....That beautiful girl was frightened of aloneness -- the same thing I've been afraid of."

 

And her own loneliness:

 

Often I've tried to walk off the loneliness, just pacing the floor.  And around five in the morning you wonder, "Wasn't there somebody in that crowd of 20,000 who could have come home and had a drink or something?"

 

In order to offer imports I spend a lot of time in other countries. I see how most of the world lives. Many of them could fit everything they own into our glove compartments. I consider it a privilege to sell in this arena and given the state of the world, I consider everything I sell a luxury item -- by bidding on my items you are acknowledging that you will approach the transaction with that perspective. You are acknowledging that I work 365 days a year to make these items available, and I acknowledge that you work very hard for your money and will do my very best to send quality items in a timely manner. Above all we both acknowledge that we've been blessed with tickets to a virtual feast of freedom and opportunity, that by simply having spare change in a dish somewhere, even when we're "broke" we are wealthier than 90% of the world's citizens and everything that could go wrong with any transaction can be worked out as long as respect and honesty remain more important than money. If you cannot acknowledge that I am a human (shooting for perfection -- you cannot imagine how hard -- but, alas, still human) please do not bid on my items, because I choose to extend you that courtesy although we have never met and I do expect it in return.
