DISPLAY BOX
This is a pre-1930 display box from the Kahn Tailoring Company, Indianapolis, Indiana. Kahn was founded in 1886 and was one of the country's largest manufacturers of men's suits and military uniforms. The company was the single largest Jewish Immigrant employers in Indianapolis. Kahn constantly employed 1000 tailors and had 3 1/2 acres of floor space. All suits were tailor made. This divided display box was perhaps for men's collars. The box measures 17 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" tall (when lid is closed) (17" tall when lid is opened) x 9 1/2" deep. When opened, the top inside lid reveals a nice black and white photograph of the Kahn building which was located in downtown Indianapolis. Early cars can be seen parked around the building. Kahn is written on the water tower on top of the building as well as across the front of the building. The lid is held open by cloth straps on both sides of the lid and has a cloth "hinge" on the back of the lid. The front of the display folds down to reveal more advertising and easy access to the contents of the box. The inside of the display is divided in half by a heavy board divider. Most of the inside is lined in white paper except of the edges which are the same dark paper cover of the outside. Except for the bottom of the display, the outside of the display box is covered with a dark "alligator" looking paper. The paper which once was a maroon color has darkened with age and has various water spots here and there. Kahns trade mark can be seen on the display lid but is not as vivid as original. The bottom of the box is an aged colored, light brown paper. The display is in really great condition for the age/use. The outside corners have some paper loss/rubbing. The front bottom corner has scrunching. The cloth straps and hinges are fine. There is some paper loss to the inside edges of both the lid and drop down front. I find no split corners - all are firmly affixed together. The piece shows dirt and age discoloration but is still bright. There is a dime size stain/spot to the inside lid on the right side of the photograph of the building. A previous owner has penciled some figures to the left of "3 1/2" on the inside lid. This is a wonderful find for anyone was does tailoring work or likes to collect Indianapolis advertising.
