Janggi (Also rendered Changgi or Jang-ki) is still avidly played throughout Korea.
Centuries ago, chess was brought to Korea from China, and you can see the many similarities between this game and Chinese chess (xiangqi).
But further investigation uncovers many differences - making this an entirely different game.
In fact, the board, the initial array of pieces, the size, shape and characters of the pieces, and the actual moves of the pieces are all different from the Chinese game.
In some ways, the Korean Janggi retains older Chinese rules which are no longer present in China; in many other ways, specific innovations have been created, making this game unique to Korea.

A Good Quality Set and Board, with English Rules

The pieces are made of solid plastic, impressed and painted with their traditional ideograms. Note that in this game, the pieces on one side are traditional characters borrowed from China, while the opposing side is a sort of cursive rendition of symbols. They vary in size, from 13/16 to 1 3/8 inches.

The board is of solid layered wood, 1 cm thick, with the natural wood grain showing. It is finished with a protective coating and lined on the edges with a band of black fabric. It measures 17 by 17 inches.

This set comes with a Rules Booklet, written in clear and concise English.
