Woollen pile on woollen foundation, handknotted. Karabagh is the most southerly of the main Caucasian provinces, just north of the present Persian border and once part of the NW Safavid province of Azerbaijan. It had a large Armenian population, and its capital is Shusha. This carpet has four large medallions resting on a navy blue ground, with a Kufi border. The design is bold and dramatic. Although it is an old rug, because of its design it is a very good rug to use with the modern furnishing and decor, and certainly is very much at home with antique and traditional furnishing.
