Kerewe Sculpture The Kerewe people live principally from fishing and from cultivating banana and millet. They are members of a highly structured society headed by a central chief. Kerewe carvers are famous for their rare, rough-looking female figures and funerary posts which display elongated features, splayed legs, flattened hands and a round head often found with a plaited coiffure.
The Art of Tanzania The West has long held romantic images of Tanzania as the land of safaris, game reserves, and as the location of the anthropological studies of the Leakeys in the Great Rift Valley; however, the artistic heritage has remained relatively unexplored and little is known of it in the United States. Early contact with Arab slave traders in the central plateau and European colonialists along the East Coast basically ignored the art of Tanzania. Later exploration found that a marvelous variety of sculptural forms existed though the art has not been exhibited as extensively as that of West Africa, the Congo, or even the Lake Tanganyika area. While the study and collecting of Tanzanian art has consisted of identifying particular styles in various cultures, the meaning, function and aesthetic standards of Tanzanians have rarely been documented, leaving a serious void in our knowledge of the history, forms and functions of these objects. Early accounts from 19th century slave traders journals make obscure references to sculptures destroyed during Islamic conversions, inferring that an accomplished carving tradition existed prior to that period. Cultures such as the Nyamwezi, Zigue, Kerewe, Zaramo and Doei have rich carving traditions which function in their ceremonial and daily lives with similarities of forms and designs that reveal common styles and complex intercultural influences among the various cultural groups.
