Persian Miniature Painting and Khatam Frame

G-1003

Khatam Picture Frame with Persian Miniature Painting
Subject: Lovers and Dervish
Insert  (7x8x5)
Photo Opening 3x4.5 (G-1003)

What is Khatam: A highly decorated Persian handcraft made of very thin pieces (usually 1 mm) of different materials including wood sea shell, bone, copper and gold cut in triangular shape and glued over wooden objects such as jewelry boxes and picture frames. Sometimes Khatam is mixed with decorative Mina’i Miniature painting to create unique elaborate pieces. The major centers that produce Khatam are Isfahan and Shiraz in Iran.

What is Mina’i: enamel colors fused onto metal, glass, ceramic or wood.  Mina is fired to earthenware temperatures (usually 800 to 900 Degrees Celsius) to give it a shiny smooth finish when dry.  Mina’i decorative objects were basically used by the royalty around the world until early 20th century. Now, they are available to anyone looking for unique inspiring artwork. The center for Mina’i production is Isfahan, Iran.

How to take care of Khatam and Mina’i:

  • Khatam is usually sealed with Varnish.  Its care is similar to other Varnished pieces of art and furniture.
  • Khatam is especially susceptible to moisture and humid environments. Care must be taken to keep the piece dry to avoid damaged.
  • Both Mina’i and Khatam may be cleaned with a soft, lint-free dry cloth weekly.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners especially those that include ammonia.
