The Perfect Combination of Moderny Design and Whimsy
As an artist and designer, I was thrilled to find such beautiful toys with simple, clean design and battery-free operation. I first learned of these delightful little creatures while vacationing with my daughter. When she discovered how to bring these tiny robots to life, she was so excited that she was bouncing like a wild thing throughout the toy store. Caught somewhere between organism and mechanism, these windup critters transform into small, hyper-active life forms, with just a turn of the key. 

Critter was conceived by chance, at the studio of a motion display company called hankscraft Motors in New York City.It has a godfather called David Dear, creator of the fabulous Duck Mirror, the Rainbow Maker and many other amazing products. The first four thousand Critters were made by hand, using a vintage Japanese gearbox from the 1950's found at a surplus store. The first place that sold Critter is called Mxyplyzyk, so between Hankscraft, Mxyplyzyk and Kikkerland, you get the idea of what we're dealing with here. Essentially a no form follows no function object.

No More Batteries!
To wind up Critter, hold it in one hand, keeping the brass weight from spinning while turning the key with the other hand. Critter works best when all four booties touch the ground approximately 4" left to right and 4 1/2" front to rear. The legs may be adjusted by bending the wire near the body. If it falls over too often, bend the legs slightly apart until Critter becomes steadier. If it's not active enough, adjust the legs closer together. Every once in a while  bit of spray lubricant will keep the engine in tip top shape!.
