Dimensional Kimonos in this Quilt Pattern - Kiko's Kimonos
Kiko is a lucky little girl with a closet full of pretty kimonos.
Read more about Kiko inside the pattern and capture her spirit in this fun three-dimensional kimono quilt.
The perfect gift quilt for the little girl in your life.
This quilt is easy to make! The top part of the kimono is dimensional, made with simple hankerchief folds. The bottoms are rectangles sewn right sides together on three sides, then turned and slightly gathered. You catch the bottom of the kimono in the seam when you sew the top to the bottom of the block.
And now for the story of this quilt design:
I had been designing several dimensional quilt patterns - Love Letters, Pic Pockets, Party Frocks and Vintage Frocks (is any of these are not yet in my store and you are interested, just let me know and I'll put them in for you). So I thought I would expand to kimonos and muu muus. During a winter sewing lull prior to Christmas, I started working on the kimono. It took several prototypes before I arrived at the right sizes and proportions. Once I did, I just loved the way it looked, and started on the first full quilt. Since I was going to be spending the holidays in Hawaii, I decided to complete and bring the quilt to show to the shops on Maui and Kauai. Sometime during this period, Kiko came to me in a dream. She was a little asian girl with short black hair, bangs, but no face, and wearing colorful kimonos. One day while on Maui, we were having lunch at a restaurant where they have paper table cloths and supply crayons for children (and me) to color on the tables. I drew a picture of Kiko as she had appeared in the dream. I can’t draw very well, but she was a pretty simple figure. The next day, my daughter and I went shopping at a fabric store in Kahului. There among the bolts of asian fabrics were four different fabrics with Kiko on them, exactly as she had appeared in my dreams and as I had drawn her! Needless to say, this design and quilt are very special to me. I hope you will enjoy it as well. I also have kits available that I will be listing soon.

I have been designing quilt patterns since 2002. My designs are characterized by ease of construction, the use of large pieces of fabric, and the use of a large-scale fabric. My trademark design element is the diagonal line, which makes all my designs dynamic, interesting, and somewhat different from traditional quilt patterns. Although I do make use of computer tools in the process, I start all my designs with pencil sketches in my notebook, which is a notebook of gridded graph paper. If it can be drawn on graph paper, it can easily be sewn into a quilt!
Since 2002, I have designed and written over 30 different quilt pattern titles, of which over 50,000 copies have been sold. I've also designed original quilts for many fabric companies.
