It is widely accepted that the Knight's Templar came into being during the early part of the 14th Century, during the latter Crusades, as a group of Warrior/Christians Monks. Legend has it that they responded to the demand for escorts for pilgrims to the Holy Land after 111 women were slain on the road to their pilgrimage. History, however, if many local legends are to be believed, tells us that the Knight's Templar were very active long before the Conquest of the Normans in 1066 under King William the Conqueror. As early as 1139 they were building churches and religious buildings that were to be for their own use. They were respected enough, by this time, that they answered to no one but the pope.
