For auction is a gorgeous Purple Slag Glass Atterbury Duck Covered Dish. It measures 10-7/8" long from the back tail feathers to the tip of the beak, by about 4-7/8" tall, by 3-7/8" wide. It is in very good condition with only one two very small chips or burst bubbles on the inner rim of the base. These do not show when the duck lid is on. The smaller one is barely detectable but can be felt with your finger. I see no other chips, cracks or repairs on this piece.
This duck was most likely made for the L. G. Wright Company. Per Taves & Jennings, authors of Slag & Marble Glass - The Prominent Years 1959 - 1985, page 123, "Mr. Wright had the Atterbury Duck mold made in 1941....Both the Atterbury Duck and the Large Hen were in the Wright line in Purple Slag for nearly forty years proving beyond doubt their popularity." They also state, "Other Purple Slag pieces Wright had made in the 1950s were the Atterbury Duck Covered Dish and Large Hen Covered Dish although it is uncertain who produced them."
The swirls of different shades of purple and the contrasting white make this a beautiful slag piece. On the underside of the base, there is an awesome swirl (see photo), very striking. There is no mark on this piece. There is a photo and information about this duck in Taves & Jennings Slag & Marble Glass book on page 130: Atterbury Duck covered Dish, #70-2, 10.9" long, Purple Slag, 1950s-60s, 1975-95, not marked, valued at $75-$85. I don't think the eyes on this duck are the original ones, since the photos in this book show smooth eyes that are similar to the ones used on the Imperial owls.
The listing shows I accept Paypal, but I will also accept a cashier's check or money order.
