LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH EMPIRE GILT BRONZE PICTURE FRAME
I am pleased to offer this magnificent and very rare example of a French Empire gilt bronze picture frame. Beautifully designed with torch and quiver cartouche interlaced with garlands of ribbons and roses. Wonderful attention to detail and lovely applied ormolu decorations.
This is a large frame, measuring 23-1/4" high to top of cartouche by 16-3/4" wide. The site or viewing area measures 16-1/8" high by 12-7/8" wide. The rabbet size will accomodate a 16-1/2" by 13-1/4" picture. We all know how rare these large frames are!
I believe there was a velvet or wood backing with easel at one time, although it is no longer present..easily replaced if desired. The mirror is not original to the frame, was added by the former owner 60+ years ago. Condition is wonderful with only a tiny leaf missing from the top of the cartouche, not noticeable.
This is one of the finest examples that I have seen. A truly stately piece with exquisitely fine design. From a private estate and never before offered for sale. Wonderful investment quality antique frame for your collection.
