Antique Tramp Art Carved Wood Cross Crucifix

Just arrived from Europe, a wonderful antique tramp art crucifix on a large and intricately carved base.

I’ve recently asked my shippers to search for religious artifacts for my customers, and this is the first that I’m so proud to have..

I’ve always been a fan of antique tramp art and Black Forest carving and constantly watch for interesting pieces, but never have I found a cross such as this! 

 

INFORMATION:  “TRAMP ART” is a woodworking style popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s characterized by the notch carving and layering (pyramiding) of many small pieces of wood.  Recycled wood from CIGAR BOXES was typically used.   The tramp art style is considered to have originally come from Germany & Scandinavia.

 


~The Cross and base is VERY TALL, with elaborate hand work throughout….even the tiny little feet under the base are carved!!~

~The base is thick with layer upon layer of carved wood….AND THIS IS AUTHENTIC TRAMP ART….SEE THE CIGAR BOX LABEL ON THE BOTTOM!!~

Measurements:

18 ½”H x 7” x 7”.

 

All of my antiques are hand selected from premier European shippers.  I do not purchase in bulk, but prefer to individually purchase items, with each piece selected for its unique characteristics and quality.

 

Condition:

The Cross and base are in good condition for its age (c1900), with normal signs of age and use, scratches, dings, and other imperfections.  Overall, it is actually far better than most of the tramp art that I see coming in from Europe these days….there are some tips chipped here and there on the wood, as to be expected; there is a little tip off one of the silver metal crossbones…all noted for disclosure only and not significant.  I always provide multiple photos that should be considered as part of the description and I encourage you to email me with any questions you might have prior to bidding.    Please keep in mind antique furniture should be purchased for its uniqueness, higher quality material and craftsmanship and antique patina, charm and character….NOT for like-new condition!!!
