LARGE FINE CIRCA 1860 BOSTON FOLK SEASCAPE OIL


Original oil on panelboard ( Academy Board ): circa 1860: panel/image size: 24 1/2 inches by 15 inches: original Cornhill and Brattle street label of " Frost & Adams - Boston " affixed to panel /verso: fine original frame: frame size is 30 1/2 x 21 inches: ( unsigned ).

A classic example of American Folk Art marine painting. The work shows similarities to some of the oils of Thomas Chambers ( notably the rocks and water treatment in Chamber's " View of Nahant " oil, sold by Christies New York on 1/21/05. ).

It is also quite possible that the work is by the same hand as the "unknown artist" who painted a similar oil ( circa 1855 ) seascape with beach, rocks and waves, represented in the Karolik Collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts ( illustrated in color: page 138 in " American Folk Painting " by Black & Lipman: pub.:1966/ C. Potter, New York ).

NOTE: Condition of oil is excellent: white glare spots in my close up photos are from camera flash only.
