LAUREL AND & HARDY LITTLE RASCALS OUR GANG!

AN 8X10 GLOSSY STILL TAKEN DURING FILMING OF THE MOVIE CLASSIC 'BABES IN TOYLAND" OR "MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS" AS IT WAS LATER CALLED WHEN MGM BOUGHT THE RIGHTS TO THIS HAL ROACH FILM. HERE WE SEE OLIVER HARDY BEING DUNKED IN THE TOYLAND POOL AS PUNISHMENT FOR BREAKING INTO BARNABY'S HOUSE AND BEING ACCUSED OF STEALING ONE OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, WHEN IT WAS MEAN, OLD BARNABY WHO DID IT. WHAT A VILLAIN HE WAS?

I'm Joy Wurgaft. I was 6 years old when I was cast to appear in "Babes In Toyland" with Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy. The year was 1934 and this magical full-length feature "FAIRY TALE" has become a movie classic the world over. I played one of the "old lady who lived in a shoe's children." While this scene was being rehearsed, my mother stood off-stage watching Oliver Hardy's DOUBLE sitting in the "dunking" chair and being dunked many times while the director set-up the shot.

I am standing with my back to the camera at the bottom of the picture (see my blonde curls) watching, too. When they were ready to film the actual scene, Oliver Hardy, himself, was then strapped in the chair, someone yelled action and the camera began to roll. What none of us knew was that the large, thick 2x4 that held the chair had been sawed nearly through so it would break when the actual filming took place. No one was told about this so that our reactions of fear and surprise would be spontaneous and un-rehearsed. My mothers were spontaneous, too. She rushed toward the edge of the pool. Fortunately, just before she reached the spot where she could be seen on camera and ruin this very expensive shot, a stagehand caught her and held her back OR ELSE that would probably have been the end of my days at Hal Roach Studios! Now it's 2009 and I'm 82 years old!
