VIAGES DE ENRIQUE WANTON A LAS TIERRAS INCOGNITAS AUSTRALES, Y AL PAIS DE LAS MONAS: EN DONDE SE EXPRESAN el caracter, ciencias, y costumbnres de estos extraordinarios habitantes (Travels of Enrique Wanton to Unknown Lands to the South and the Country of the Monas Containing Information on the Customs, Character, Sciences, and Policies of These Extraordinary Inhabitants)
Wanton, Enrique. Translated from the Italian by Don Joaquin de Guzman. MADRID: Por Don Antonio de Sancha, 1778-1781. Second Edition. 3 Volumes of Four-Volume Set.
Wonderful Spanish Edition of this eighteenth-century, imaginary voyage made by an Englishman named Wanton. The title states that it was translated from an English manuscript of Enrico Wanton's voyage to the unknown parts of the Orient and Southern Hemisphere, peopled by either monkey or dog-headed inhabitants. The Italian author, Zaccaria Seriman (1708-1784), a Venetian social critic, originally published this work in two volumes in 1749 as a critique of eighteenth-century Venetian society. Illustrated with plates on costumes, the theater, and moments of his "voyage" through Venetian society, it received little attention and no acclaim. Seriman drastically edited the Viaggi di Wanton, rewriting and adding much new material. It became virtually a new work, full of satire, in the vein of Gulliver's Travels. The amusing plates of "Wanton" in the company of fawning monkeys and dogs dressed as humans have been recut by the Spanish engraver Patiño.
Each volume 5.5" x 7.75". Three volumes. TOMO PRIMERO, 1781, 175 pp., 7 engraved folding plates; TOMO II, 1778, 223 pp., 2 engraved plates; TOMO TERCERO 1778, 254 pp., 2 engraved plats. Bound in full contemporary Spanish mottled calf, spine elaborately gilt, with green and red morocco title-labels amd floral vignettes. hand-marbled endpapers. Some bumping to edges, chipping to spine leather. Interiors very clean.
These are very rare and wonderful editions.
