The first recorded Lebanese immigrants in Australia were the Fachry brothers who arrived in 1876, believing they were setting foot on American soil. They were the forerunners of the first wave of immigrants from Lebanon in the 1880s. These pioneers settlers became hawkers who travelled the countryside, peddling clothes and soft goods to farmers and those in the country towns. Their next move was to become shopkeepers, bring out the rest of their family & establish themselves permanently in this country. By 1920 immigration from Lebanon had virtually ceased and small groups of Lebanese in the major capital cities were left to evolve their own blend of Australian & Lebanese cultures.

The second wave of settlers came to Australia during the period of economic prosperity of the 1950s. These Lebanese worked initially in Australia's expanding post-war industries. Many later established small businesses such as milk bars, coffee lounges and restaurants. The last wave of immigrants from Lebanon was a direct result of conflicts in the Middle East.
