Peggy Lee is likely the only American female vocalist whose artistry shone from the pre-World War II era through the rock era, with hits in the 1940s on into the '70s. The sultry, smoky-voiced Lee boasted musical associations with Benny Goodman (the early 1940s classic "Why Don't You Do Right?" with his big band), Paul McCartney (who wrote a song for her), and the legendary songwriting/production team Leiber & Stoller. Also, unlike most of her peers, she was a prolific songwriter herself (with about 200 songs to her name). While most other singers emoted, Lee's wise, urbane approach was as alluringly cool as the other side of the pillow.
BEST OF THE SINGLES COLLECTION is just that, a vivid and vital cross-section of her singular career. Lee straddled the divide between pop and jazz genres--"Golden Earrings," "Black Coffee," "Fever," and the contemplative, anthem-like "Is That All There Is?", all help define their respective times and yet remain timeless. Like precious few other singers before or since, Lee personalized aspects of jazz, pop, and rhythm-&-blues into a catalog of work that remains, in Duke Ellington's phrase, "beyond category."
